Polygraph tests have long been the stuff of crime dramas and courtroom thrillers.

Hooked up to wires, sweating under pressure, the subject faces a barrage of questions while the machine supposedly separates truth from fiction. But can it really? And more intriguingly – can someone actually cheat a polygraph test?

At M19 Solutions, we conduct professional lie detector tests across Manchester and beyond – but we also know all too well the myths, tactics and history of people trying to beat the system. So let’s take a closer look at the truth behind the polygraph.

How do lie detector tests work?

A polygraph test measures physiological responses to questions – things like heart rate, breathing, blood pressure and perspiration. The idea is simple: when someone tells a lie, their body reacts. By tracking those reactions in real-time, a trained examiner can spot patterns that suggest deception.

The test typically involves three types of questions:

  • Irrelevant – basic factual questions to set a baseline
  • Control – emotionally charged but unrelated to the investigation
  • Relevant – directly related to the issue at hand

The examiner compares your responses across these categories to identify inconsistencies.

A brief history of beating the polygraph

The polygraph has been around since the early 20th century. From the start, people have tried to outsmart it. In the 1940s and 50s, intelligence agencies on both sides of the Cold War reportedly trained operatives in techniques to “fool the machine.”

Notably, CIA and KGB spies were taught to regulate their breathing, cause pain during baseline questions (like biting the inside of their cheek or tensing muscles) and control their emotional reactions. These tricks, they believed, would throw off the examiner’s ability to detect lies.

Even today, stories of cheating the polygraph pop up in everything from spy novels to internet forums – but how effective are these methods?

Common tactics people try (and why they fail)

Here are a few classic “cheat the test” tactics – and why they don’t really work:

  1. Physical countermeasures – People may try to cause discomfort during neutral questions by clenching muscles, biting their tongue, or digging a toe into their shoe. The idea is to elevate physiological responses across the board to mask spikes. However, experienced examiners can spot unnatural or suspicious behaviour and may halt the test.
  2. Mental countermeasures – This involves distracting the mind with complex calculations, repeating a word silently, or trying to deliberately suppress emotions. Again, trained professionals are alert to inconsistencies and uncooperative behaviour. Mental manipulation is far harder to sustain than people think.
  3. Medication or alcohol – Some try to numb anxiety by taking sedatives or having a drink before the test. This is not only unreliable, but also easily detectable – and often leads to disqualification or refusal to test.
  4. Fake calmness – Practised liars believe they can “think their way” through the test by staying calm. But physiological signs are difficult to fully suppress and polygraph professionals are trained to spot subtle cues, not just obvious spikes.

Are polygraphs foolproof?

No test is 100% foolproof – and the polygraph is no exception. While lie detector tests are a useful investigative tool, they’re not admissible in most UK courts and should never be the sole basis for legal action. However, when conducted by a qualified and experienced examiner, polygraphs can be highly accurate – particularly when combined with other evidence.

At M19 Solutions, we approach each polygraph with the highest professional standards. Our tests are conducted in controlled environments, using the latest polygraph technology and strict procedural guidelines. We don’t just rely on machines – we rely on the skill, training and instincts of seasoned professionals.

So… can you cheat a lie detector test?

Technically? People try.

Successfully? Very rarely.

Most attempts to outsmart a polygraph are not only ineffective but also raise red flags for the examiner. The truth is, if you’re being honest, you have nothing to fear. And if you’re lying – the test will likely pick it up.
