Last month, news broke that Jay-Z had hired a private investigator to help him catch out a lying witness. As reported by RollingStone, the famous rapper, multimillionaire businessman, and husband of the current reigning Queen Bee of pop has been embroiled in a court case which first began in 2016.

Jay-Z’s court case
Jay Z’s court case started when a fragrance brand named Parlux sued him for breach of contract. The perfumier was up in arms because, allegedly, Jay-Z had not met the conditions of a deal that had been signed in 2012.
According to this deal, Jay-Z had been paid $2 million in royalties and was supposed to make personal appearances on television and in-store at Macy’s, in order to promote his signature cologne, Gold Jay-Z. He was also contractually obliged to assist with the development of extensions of the product line, known as “flankers” in fragrance industry lingo.
The former CEO of Parlux, Donald Loftus, claimed that Jay-Z had failed to meet these terms, never making a single personal appearance. The company also claimed that it had lost over $18 million as a result of the mogul’s failure to honour his side of the deal.
What did a private investigator do?
The lawsuit for breach of contract ensued, but Jay-Z’s legal team countered with a lawsuit of their own, claiming that Parlux had failed to provide necessary royalty payments, business plans and account reports.
Jay-Z is expected to appear as a witness, and Donald Loftus has been asked to give a remote testimony, as he claimed he was too afraid of Covid-19 to appear in indoor public settings.
However, Jay-Z’s head lawyer, Alex Spiro, has said that the former CEO of Parlux has been flexible with the truth regarding his reluctance to appear in court, and the rapper’s team hired a private investigator to prove this.
The investigator, a former policeman, took numerous photographs of Loftus happily entering various indoor public spaces, including buses, restaurants, and grocery stores, often without even wearing a mask. While Loftus has undeniably been caught out, it remains to be seen how this legal battle between two giants will play out and who will walk away victorious.
